I Had A Dream…

Last night, I had a dream about one of my characters, Paul Emerson. He was upset about something and wouldn’t tell me what it was. I can see the setting so clearly, which is odd because I never remember my dreams. I was in his house – the one I’d created for him – and he was being really standoffish. Kind of a jackass. He ended up leaving at one point and then returning with some other guy. It could have been his best friend, AJ Morgan, but I wasn’t paying very close attention. LOL.

When I woke up, I actually remembered the dream. And in my sleep-cluttered mind, I tried to figure out why he’d appeared in my dream. And then I remembered…

But first, let me tell you a bit about this man. He has a very specific role as an arrogant prick in the first book of my series, Unlikely Venture. However, he’d also thrown his Rolex in the ring for a shot to win over Jessica, our heroine. But I’ll let you find out the rest of the story on your own.

Here’s the thing about Paul. He was the very first character I’d ever “created.” When I was plotting Unlikely Venture, I was planning it around Paul. But I ultimately decided he needed something bigger, so he had only a small role in the first book. It was enough to turn most readers into haters, and that panicked the hell out of me because I knew this guy, knew why he was the way he was, and why they needed to give him another chance, why he so desperately deserved redemption.

He’s always been my favorite. Not by a little, either. He’s so alpha, brilliant, an entrepreneur (and you know I’m passionate about entrepreneurship!), and the arrogant prick thing is right on target. His book, Venture Forward, was the hardest one I’ve ever written because I knew I needed to bring him to his knees and kick him while he was down to make his transformation that much more impactful.

Now, that was the long-winded way of telling you about my epiphany – why he was so angry. Earlier that day, I’d confided to The Stiletto Click, my Facebook reader group, that Jeff Torres (current swoony alpha of Hard Time) was nearing that top spot.

Bottom line? I think this dream was a manifestation of guilt. LOL! These guys have some hold on me, huh?

Stop Hounding Me With Buy Links!!!!

People want to buy but they don’t WANT TO BE SOLD!

I love that quote. It’s so true. How many times do you go into a store, greeted by eager-beaver salespeople asking if they can help you find something to buy?

I could never be in sales…

But alas, I AM.

I’m an indie author. Not only do I write, but I also market and SELL.

Like with most businesses, the market is pretty much saturated with books. You name it, there’s a genre out there. And about a trillion books within each, with more and more being self-published on a DAILY.

As an entrepreneurial author, you may find success in publishing a book that embodies a brand-new concept, something new, different and alluring because it is outside the norm.

But that’s risky because people like what they like and most are creatures of habit. So unless you come up with something cutting edge that an influencer finds appealing, you may be SOL with that plan.

But fear not…there are other ways to gain an audience.

The world of indie publishing is very different now than it was a year ago. Isn’t that insane? I Google articles and if they are pre-2013, I rarely bother reading them because they are THAT outdated.

Social media takes the front seat with indie publishing. You need a presence and you need a ridiculously large network to get your name out there. But that’s not even enough…

The challenge is building a network where you form meaningful relationships, not just hey, post my link and I’ll post yours kind of stuff. That doesn’t do anything. It’s all white noise. And like I said, people get annoyed at the constant buy links. They aren’t helping authors move units.

The ideal is to build relationships online that translate to relationships OFFLINE. Grassroots efforts ultimately result in more widespread awareness, although they take time to gain traction. I’ve given plenty of books away…why? Because if you read “Unlikely Venture” and tell ten friends that you loved it, maybe they will buy and love it…and leave a review on Amazon. =)

And when “Nothing Ventured” comes out, they’ll be anxious to get their hands on that story and tell even more people if they enjoy it. By the time “Venture Forward” is released, I will have established a fan base (hopefully) for the rest of my author career.

Here’s the key takeaway – Always keep focus on PEOPLE. Create for them, market for them, make them happy and excited because they are the ones who can make or break any of your entrepreneurial endeavors.

Not All Silicon Valley Execs Dress Like Zuckerberg

I got a new pair of KG Kurt Geiger sandals today.  They’re HOT…like if you touch them, your finger will sizzle HOT.

I tried them on, teetered around the kitchen and wondered if my current heroine Avery might sport them.  Although anyone who knows me would imagine that ALL heroines I create would share my insatiable love for dangerously high heels, I’m still not sure about Avery.  So to avoid tearing out my hair over that very disconcerting fact, I’m going to redirect my attention to fashion…yes, fashion in Silicon Valley.

Oxymoron?  Not entirely.

Just as an aside, if I were a guy in Silicon Valley, I’d never sport the Zuckerberg ensemble.  EVER.  I’m not crunchy, I don’t particularly care for hoodies and if sandals don’t have a heel, they aren’t generally welcome in my closet.

I’m excited to report that there are several female execs in the technology hotbed that sport veeery exclusive designer wares.  Just ask Entrepreneur magazine.  They’ll tell you all about Silicon Valley’s best dressed.  Even Vanity Fair weighed in.  Think Ruzwana Bashir, Marissa Mayer, Juliet De Baubigny and Alison Pincus.  Not only are they entrepreneurs but they’ve got mad style.

My husband does a lot of work with VCs and tells me my vision of glamour in the Valley is somewhat flawed.  Sure there are exceptions, but they’re few and far between.  Whatever.  I’ll keep my perspective.  I knew it couldn’t all be about khakis and button downs.

So, hell YES, I’d sport these sandals in Palo Alto.  But I’ll opt to stay out of San Francisco unless I’m driving.  Way too hilly.  =)

A Knife-Wielding Lunatic Is On The Loose In My Neighborhood…I Bet He’s Got A Pretty Dark Backstory

I’m officially stuck.  I’ve written exactly 6 pages of Venture Forward and…screeching halt!  Why?  Because although my hero fascinates me, I don’t know where the hell I’m going with his story.  I’ve played the “What If” game for DAYS and nothing!  But this is my normal process.  I just write, sometimes hitting 100 pages before figuring out where the story is headed.  No outline.  It’s just not how I work.  =)

So now, I’m seeking inspiration wherever I can find it.

I need a Blue Moon Summer Ale for some clarity.

But I’m too afraid to leave my house because there’s some lunatic with a knife on the loose in my neighborhood?!  What the HELL???  Where are we living these days??  I wonder what HIS backstory is…I guess someone must have messed him up pretty bad.

I write complicated, dark, brooding but not moronic.  This brainiac evidently pulled a knife on a woman in her front yard in broad daylight when her dog attacked him and sent him packing into the woods.  What a freaking idiot.  Obviously common sense didn’t factor in when he opted NOT to case the house before his novice attempt at an armed robbery.  No amount of backstory would make that jerk hero-worthy.

I now have in my inbox…

Drumroll please…

The final version of Unlikely Venture.  Complete.  Edited.  Formatted.  Ready for…something.

That “something” is still TBD.  Still not sure of the next step.  Although I did come up with the other two titles for the series.  =)

1.  Unlikely Venture

2.  Nothing Ventured

3.  Venture Forward

!!!

But I still have a decision to make…self-publish or query?  That’s not a decision I’m making tonight.  Or this weekend, for that matter.  I want to bask in the glow of accomplishment for the next few days.  I worked so hard on this book and I’m so proud of the finished product.

It’s…celebration time, come on!
